Ghana Grid Code and Standards of Performance

AEA developed the first national electricity grid code for Ghana’s power system and has been in operation since. The grid code was based on the principle of "open access" and covered the determination of transmission standards, practices and marketing rules. The purpose of the code was to ensure that the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) provided fair, transparent, non-discriminatory, safe, reliable, secure and cost-efficient services to all.

The assignment undertook the following:

  • defined the obligations, roles, responsibilities and relationships of all code participants, users and operators of the NTIS.
  • established the procedures and guidelines for the coordinated development, management and operation of the transmission grid and other interconnected equipment and facilities.
